Week #2 Recap

Posted Wed May 09, 2012 - 11:27 AM

Jamie Feenstra belted a walk-off 2-run homerun in the bottom of the eighth, leading his Generals to their first win of the season 16-14 over the Mustangs. It was Jamie's third hit and run scored of the evening. Katie Wilpstra, Bryan Arseneault, Mark Ottaway and Stewart Campbell each reached base four times in the win. For the Mustangs, Harry VanRuitenberg homered while Joel and Andrew Hill went a combined 5-for-6.

The Snappers improved to 2-0, besting the Bees in 7 innings 19-13. Matt Ottaway hit his second homerun in as many games while Henry Vroom put in a 4-for-5 performance and scored three times. Kim Moesker was 5-for-6 and scored three runs. The Bees Wayne McKay went 3-for-4 and hobbled around the bases to score three times.

The Aeros are the league's other undefeated team. For the second straight week they won by two runs, this time beating the Bulls 16-14. Nic LaVallee homered in the win and Josh Boyce smacked three solid hits while Ty Steckley tracked down some 250 fly balls in the centrefield. Henry Booy played a solid firstbase for the losing Bulls. He and Jeff Bydeley each went 4-for-4. Tim Terpstra homered in his first at-bat for the Bulls.

The Lake Monsters got into the win column with a 15-9 victory over the Dragons. Ben vanKlinken homered again and Jamie Bydeley and Sam Guerette each went a perfect 4-for-4. The Dragons got a strong showing from Stephanie Vandertil, who collected four hits and Nick Burger who reached base five times.

Week # 1 Recap

Posted Tue May 01, 2012 - 10:54 PM

A welcome to all those Peoples 2-Pitch "rookies" making their "debuts" this week. It sure started with a bang!

Jamie Klazinga scored four times, Rafe Jamieson went 5-for-5 at the top of the Bees lineup, leading the yellow team to a 21-19 win over the Generals in the season opener. Steve Ruetz had a solid showing at the plate and in the field for the Bees. The Generals were led by Bethany Robinson who belted a bases-clearing double over a drawn-in outfield, and defending MVP Peter Robinson who homered twice in defeat.

The Bulls recovered from a 9-5 deficit, scoring five times in the bottom of the ninth to knock off the Lake Monsters 10-9. Dona Belanger drove in the tying and winning runs. Ben vanKlinken homered and scored four times for the Lake Monsters while hitting for the cycle.

Matt Ottaway, Steve McEwen, Matt Kelly and Tom Riedl each went yard for the Snappers who claim their first victims of the season, beating the Mustangs 20-10. Jesse Wierenga hit for the cycle by the fourth inning in the win. Harry vanRuitenberg flashed the leather for the Mustangs in centre field, ending a fourth-inning rally. Andrew Hill went 3-for-3 in the loss.

Pete Parke belted a go-ahead three run homerun in the bottom of the eighth, leading the Aeros to a 19-17 win over the Dragons. Nick LaVallee turned heads with a couple of long bombs (although only one counted!) and a great diving catch in shallow right field for the Aeros. Steve Jackson anchored shortstop for the Dragons making a number of strong plays (including one fantastic double play). First-timer Jeff Hulshof and Joya Jamieson each picked up three hits and three runs for the Dragons in the loss.

We've been told to assume we're on Diamonds #1 & #2 this year unless we hear otherwise.

That means go to diamond #1 NOT #3.

Final Recap

Congratulations go to the Knights! They demonstrated why they were the best team in the regular season by cruising to two convincing wins over the Bandits in the three game final. Captain Ben vanKlinken was flashy with the glove and reliable with the bat to earn the playoff MVP. He and brother Phil have now snapped the dreaded "vanKlinken Curse." For Jamie Feenstra, Kevin Mahon, and Matt Kelly this was their fourth, third, and second championship respectively.

A tip-of-the-hat to the Greg Zantingh-led Bandits who, although ranked last overall on the regular season, knocked off a couple of tough competitors (Aces, Smokies) to win the Ruth Division Championship and secure the Peoples Cup Runner-Up Trophy, finishing second overall.

In the one game, third place round, it was Joe Perl's Smokies firing on all cylinders to beat Jeff Bydeley's Colonels.

Big "thank-you's" also go out to the following people this year:

*John Booy, Captain of the 5th place Aces
*Sam Guerette, Captain of the 6th place Pelicans
*Joel Campbell, Captin of the Lumberjacks and Steve Jackson, Captain of the Hammerheads

*Brent Campbell, 2-Pitch Committee Chair and Committee members Craig Callister, Steve Jackson, and Jay vanKlinken
*Phil vanKlinken for top-notch t-shirt and logo designs (can't wait to see what's in store for 2012!)
*Lucas and Rafe Jamieson for looking after the equipment (let's continue to pray for Rafe on his road to recovery --- I smell a come-back player of the year for next season!)
*All of those who pitched in with score keeping and umpiring
